HALO 2 ASSET ARCHIVESETUP GUIDE / BETA 0.1.0

UNOFFICIAL COMMUNITY SOFTWARE · BETA 0.1.0

Bring your game.
Play it on your Mac.

This launcher sets up Halo 2 for Windows Vista using a private Wine compatibility environment. It includes no Halo game content, Microsoft codecs, or Wine binaries. You provide the game and audio files; the launcher downloads two checksum-verified runtime packages directly from their maintainers.

01What you need

  • macOS 14 or later, with at least 12 GB free disk space. The app contains Apple silicon and Intel executables. Gameplay has been tested on an M4 Max running macOS 26.6.2; other hardware and OS versions remain unverified.
  • Rosetta on Apple silicon. If needed, run softwareupdate --install-rosetta in Terminal and review Apple's license prompt. The launcher does not accept that license for you.
  • Your licensed Halo 2 for Windows Vista files. Installer 2.1's h2pc_data.bin, its enclosing ZIP, or a complete Project Cartographer game folder are accepted. An original DVD alone is not yet a supported import format.
  • The supported Microsoft audio package described below.
  • An internet connection for approximately 341 MB of runtime downloads.

02Open this unsigned beta

  1. Open the downloaded DMG and drag Halo 2 Mac Launcher into Applications.
  2. Open the launcher. This beta has a local ad-hoc signature for executable integrity; it has no Developer ID signature and is not notarized.
  3. If macOS blocks this unrecognized developer, go to System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway after the attempted launch. Review the app name before confirming. Follow Apple's instructions.

Do not bypass a warning that the app will damage your computer. Keep the warning and contact the distributor for investigation.

03Choose your game and audio files

The Project Cartographer installation page links the installer 2.1 archive this launcher accepts. Review their ownership requirements and terms. You can select the downloaded ZIP directly.

  1. Choose your game archive or folder. Source files are copied and left unchanged.
  2. Choose your licensed MPSetup.exe package (Microsoft Windows Media Player 9) or its WMADMOD.DLL decoder.
  3. Confirm that you own the game and have permission to use the selected files, then click Set up Halo 2.
  4. Wait for setup to finish, then click Play Halo 2. The first startup can take a few minutes.

The launcher does not supply or download Microsoft audio files. It checks the exact package/decoder that was tested. Selecting an unsupported version stops setup before Wine is downloaded. An ownership checkbox does not grant software rights.

The supported audio package is Microsoft's older MPSetup.exe, SHA-256:
678c102847c18a92abf13c3fae404c3473a0770c871a046b45efe623c9938fc0.
The extracted WMADMOD.DLL SHA-256 is:
9a80890f782008f8a64d9fb6bc4a2e5bd18dba514ea6b87dcc9d33a999901b07.

See Microsoft's package documentation and the Winetricks package reference to identify your installer. Review the terms that apply to your copy. No full Media Player installation runs; the launcher extracts and registers only the tested audio decoder.

04Your files and privacy

All generated data lives in ~/Library/Application Support/Halo2MacLauncher/. The launcher contains no analytics, accounts, or automatic updater. Runtime downloads contact GitHub and its asset servers. Halo 2 and Project Cartographer may make their own network connections.

  • Install/game: imported game files and game configuration.
  • Install/prefix: your private Windows environment. Profiles and saves are below drive_c/users.
  • Logs: local setup and game diagnostics. Review logs before sharing them.
  • Downloads: verified runtime archives, retained for setup retries.

Replacing or moving the launcher app preserves your progress. To remove everything, first back up your saves, quit Halo 2 and the launcher, then remove the app and its Application Support folder.

05Troubleshooting

  • Antivirus: some Wine DLLs can trigger heuristic detections. The launcher never changes antivirus settings. If files disappear, review the exact detection and report it to the antivirus vendor. Signing/notarization would not guarantee acceptance by third-party scanners.
  • Setup interrupted: reopen the launcher and retry with the same source files. A completed installation is protected from reinstallation.
  • Missing audio: verify the selected audio package and check the setup log for successful wmadmod.dll registration.
  • Slow startup: allow a few minutes for the first launch. Keep intro movies disabled and the frame limit at 60 FPS, as configured.
  • Multiplayer: untested. The launcher does not create a Cartographer account, change firewall/router settings, or update your mod version automatically.
